Module 2: Philosophical Foundations of Education and Curriculum Design Planning

Rhonda and I created a Prezi to present the knowledge, key concepts and relationships between the Conceptions of Curriculum from Module 1 and Philosophical Theories and Curriculum Designs from Module 2. Our visual begins with a concrete background to represent the “foundations” on which we are building our knowledge. The bubbles surrounding the lightbulb are messy yet connected, representing the imperfect thought process required to come to a place of deep understanding. Finally, the pathway between the smaller bubbles leads to the “Summary” bubble at the top, where you will find our final thoughts and connections.

Our visual begins with a brief revisit to the conceptions of curriculum, explaining each concept in using scholarly evidence. From here, we go on to outline the connections between the Philosophical Foundations and the Conceptions. This is done through a web, then a Popplet visual. After this, the Prezi will take you through the various Curriculum Designs, and the connections we made between them and the Conceptions, again using a web and Popplet visual. Finally, our map’s summary bubble connects all three aspects - the Designs, Philosophies and Conceptions using a clear and succinct table.

I hope you enjoy! I look forward to seeing the visuals that you create, and learning from you all!

  1. Hi Jen,
The way you and Rhonda used Prezi really highlights how interconnected these ideas are. Ryan and I drew similar connections between curriculum conceptions, philosophies and design. I found curriculum design to be the most fluid and there was a space in a number of the conceptions of curriculum where different curriculum designs could be applied.

I need to think more about how these conceptions inform the lived curriculum right now. We certainly have subject-centered curriculum design in Ontario yet there is a movement right now for a learner-centered focus through establishing learner profiles and Universal Design for Learning. Can we move away from seeing design in distinct (and maybe mutually exclusive) categories or can they co-exit? Thoughts?

    Thanks for sharing!
    Stephanie
