Module 4 & 5 - PLC

Hi All, Here is the link to my electronic journal. I began by exploring 4 different Facebook groups for my Professional Learning Communities, then when I received no responses, ended up falling in love with "Cult of Pedagogy". Although I had some frustrations with the actual engagement of the members and the lack of collaboration (zero replies in total...), I find the website immensely informative, modern, easy to navigate and easy to approach from a professional learning standpoint. I learned about a form of instruction called "Mastery Teaching" that I am so engaged with, and I look forward to exploring this further.  Anyway, here is my documentation of my PLC journey! I look forward to comparing and contrasting my lack of engagement with a fellow peer :) Jen

Module 3: Extension Blog

Image
Hello!      For the extended visual, Rhonda Swenson and I added planning, instruction and assessment to our Prezi. Rather than continuing to add on to the original Prezi, we decided to take the core concepts of Philosophy and Design and extend each of those to incorporate Planning, Instruction and Assessment. Our visual was more of a mind-map to show our thought process during Module 2, and a refined and thought-out image for Module 3. The chart in the last slide combines all of the concepts we've explored so far in a more succinct visual. I've attached this below as well. Our Prezi can be found here: https://prezi.com/view/HiuBlLMghqG83n6LXsHC/ If you wish to see the entire presentation, just zoom out and start at slide 1. I look forward to hearing your feedback! Best, Jen

Module 2: Philosophical Foundations of Education and Curriculum Design Planning

Rhonda and I created a Prezi to present the knowledge, key concepts and relationships between the Conceptions of Curriculum from Module 1 and Philosophical Theories and Curriculum Designs from Module 2 . Our visual begins with a concrete background to represent the “foundations” on which we are building our knowledge. The bubbles surrounding the lightbulb are messy yet connected, representing the imperfect thought process required to come to a place of deep understanding. Finally, the pathway between the smaller bubbles leads to the “Summary” bubble at the top, where you will find our final thoughts and connections.      Our visual begins with a brief revisit to the conceptions of curriculum, explaining each concept in using scholarly evidence. From here, we go on to outline the connections between the Philosophical Foundations and the Conceptions. This is done through a web, then a Popplet visual. After this, the Prezi will take you through the various Curricu...

Conceptions of Curriculum

Image
My idea of curriculum has always been in regard to what we are teaching, not how.  It has always been about interpreting the list of items that students must learn, and thinking of creative ways to teach them. Ornstein & Hunkins define curriculum more broadly as “a plan for achieving goals” and “dealing with the learner's experiences”, they also say that “[b]y this definition, almost anything planned in or outside of school is part of the curriculum.” (Ornstein & Hunkins, 2013, p. 8) . Exploring the various concepts of curriculum this week brought up an abundance of questions and thoughts, but most prevalent was a feeling of frustration toward the lack of change in our modern schooling system since the twentieth century. One quote from the authors Ornstein & Hunkins has continued to echo in my head, and has bubbled its way into my conversations with colleagues, friends and family over the last few days. That quote is this   The behavioral approach started wi...
